In a few weeks the world's best from the United States and Europe will compete in the latest edition of the Ryder Cup, but on Tuesday, Sept. 13th, it was a group of 25 Trumansburg Golf Club members and frequent golfers who went head-to-head in a Ryder Cup-style tournament. In the end, it was Team Smith defeating Team Hohwald, 12 1/2—11 1/2, in an one-day, 27-hole showdown.

It came down to the evening's 12 individual match play matches and Team Smith's Kevin Wilsea earning the Ryder Cup clinching point by defeating Team Hohwald's Mike Lunger, 1-up. Wilsea had a one-point lead heading into the 18th hole and held on with a bogey. Team Smith earned an early lead in the individual matches, 9 1/2—8 1/2, thanks impart to Dennis Lynch defeating Deryck Downey (2-up), Ryan Purdy downing R.J. Anderson (3&2) and Dan Reynolds taking down Hank Tark (2&1). Team Smith's Kevin Manheim earned a critical 1/2 point in the early individual matches, splitting with Team Hohwald's Damon Reed, who trailed by three after the first three holes, to help propel his team to an early advantage.

Despite the early deficit, Team Hohwald used two victories by Trevor Sherman and Mike Snyder to claim its first lead of the day, 10 1/2—9 1/2. Sherman knocked off Jared Smith (1-Up), while Snyder eased to a 2&1 win over Oscar Larson. The advantage was short lived, however, as Team Smith charged back with three straight wins by Matt Watson, Nathan Scheer and Wilsea. Watson took down the opposing team's captain, Corey Hohwald (2-Up), while Scheer won by the same margin over Gregg Weatherby,

After the first 12 matches, which featured six captain & mate and six two-person best ball match-ups, the contest was tied at six points apiece. Team Smith took the morning Captain & Mate matches by winning 3.5 points, but Team Hohwald matched its foe with 3.5 points in the best ball matches.

Key points were collected by Team Smith's Mike Weaver and Reynolds, which trailed by one with two to play in the Captain & Mate portion of the contest and comeback to earn 1/2 point thanks to a birdie on Hole No. 17. In the same session, Team Smith's Kevin Manheim and Larson earned a 1-Up victory over Scott Beardsley and Downey, while teammates Wilsea and Purdy had the same type of victory over Team Hohwald's Mike Snyder and Matt Anderson.

Earning victories for Team Hohwald in the best ball portion were Hohwald/Tarr (5&3 over Miller/Reynolds), Reed/Weatherby (1-Up over Weaver/Purdy)) and Mike James and Lunger (3&2 over Manheim/Larson). There were co-tournament MVPs, as Team Smith's Kevin Wilsea and Matt Watson went 3-0-0 on the day. Team Hohwald's Mike James also went 3-0-0.

As the end of August nears and the summer golf leagues conclude, the Trumansburg Golf Club has opened up Fall League enrollment. The two-person team league will begin the week of August 29th and end by Sunday, September 25th.

Fall League teams can be made up of two men, two women or mixed. The league will have separate divisions based on team makeup. Each team will be asked to play two rounds of two-person best ball, captain and mate and individual stroke play. Each format will need to have a Front 9 and Back 9 score. The team with the lowest combined score in their division will be declared the winner.

League dues for the Fall League is just $20 per team. For each round, non-Trumansburg Golf Club members will pay just $15 per person for nine holes with cart. If golfer decides to walk the cost will be $10 per nine-hole round.

There is no set day or time a team needs to play their round. Two-person teams can play when they want. We just ask you meet the deadline of getting your rounds finished. Playing with another twosome is encouraged but it is not necessary. Questions about the Fall League can be directed to Golf Operations Manager Jared Smith by e-mailing him at JaredSmith16@gmail.com or 607-387-8844.
